Searching memory about West Lakeis an essay written by Zhang Dai,a literary aesthetician in the late Ming Dynasty.It is also the only one of Zhang Dai’s works included in the General Catalogue of Sikuquanshu,a masterpiece compiled in the Qing Dynasty.The book is divided into five volumes: "West Lake North Road" "West Lake West Road" "West Lake Middle Road" "West Lake South Road" and "West Lake Outdoor Road".In Zhang Dai’s memory,what’s kind of west lake landscape can be divided into?what’s basic factorcomposed of? and what’s their own characteristic? Therefore,it is worth exploring what Zhang Dai’spropose in this literary work and what he presented the west lake landscape aesthetic taste and aesthetic ideal.This paper is divided into the following four parts:The first chapter is the analysis of the basic concepts of the West Lake landscape in Zhang Dai’s Searching memory about West Lake,which is divided into two sections.The first section clarifies successively the meanings of "scenery" "view" "landscape" and "West Lake landscape" in Chinese classical aesthetic thoughts.The definition of these concepts is the basic part of this paper and also is the foothold of this research.The second section initially classifies the West Lake landscape in this book from three perspectives: objective scenery,near natural history and humanity,and the hierarchy of the West Lake landscape.The second chapter is the analysis of the overall structures and basic factors of the West Lake landscapes in the book.Firstly,analyzing the five Road depicted an overall large West Lake landscape structure.Secondly,exploring the appearance of each landscape as an integral structure;Finally,finding out the characteristics of the overall structure of each landscape in each road.Meanwhile,this is a step-by-step progress.The third chapter is the analysis of the basic types of West Lake landscape in Searching memory about West Lake.It is divided into three types: nature,history and people.The concept of nature is more inclined to time.The historical part focuses on summarizing the scenic spots with the rise and fall of history.The part of characters aims to discover the roles and functions of all kinds of people in the presentation of the West Lake landscape.The fourth part is the the analysis of general style of the West Lake landscape by Zhang Dai.Based on the summary of Searching memory about West Lake,the author will analyze Zhang Dai’s conclusion and evaluation of the style of the West Lake visitors in the past dynasties,and further analyze Zhang Dai’s aesthetic taste and ideal of the West Lake,summarizing Zhang Dai’s thoughts on it.Through sorting out the overall structure and components of the West Lake landscape in Searching memory about West Lake,analyzing its basic types,excavating the characteristics of the West Lake landscape,the author wants to summarize Zhang Dai’s aesthetic taste and aesthetic ideal of the West Lake,and wants to grasp Zhang Dai’s aesthetic thought of the West Lake.Finally,she aims at inspiring people to think about the way of the aesthetic construction of the West Lake landscape today.
