A Report On E-C Translation Of Women In Modern China(Chapter One)

In the 1930 s and 1940 s,a group of foreign journalists including Helen Foster Snow carried out many objective reports on China,making the world understand the Chinese Communist Party and China for the first time.The book Women in Modern China,published in 1967,was Helen Snow’s record of the women in China at that time.The translation of this work has some historical reference value for promoting the study of women in China.This translation practice report takes the translation of Women in Modern China(Chapter One)as the research object,with Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as a guide,to summarizes translation strategies,techniques adopted and the key points,difficulties encountered in the translation process from three aspects: vocabulary,syntax,discourse.At lexical level,the author mainly uses translation methods such as transliteration,paraphrase,amplification,transformation and omission to deal with Wade-Giles Romanization names and places,as well as polysemy.At syntactic level,for passive sentences and complex sentences,under the principle of ensuring the accurate transmission of information,the author gets rid of the constraints of the original form of sentence and reorganizes the language structure according to target readers’ language habits,to make the translation as authentic as possible.At textual level,the author mainly adopts translation methods such as amplification(conjunctions and verbs),paraphrase,omission,and transformation to make the translation properly cohesive,coherent,and consistent with the source text in the narrative style.This report helps Chinese readers to understand women in China from the perspective of foreign journalists,which is of great significance to enrich the studies on women in China,especially during the 20 th century.Besides,by summarizing the translation methods and techniques of the source texts,this report aims to provide a useful reference for the translation practice and research of documentary literature texts.
