This translation practice report is based on the translation of The Next Generation of Scientists in Africa,a research report on the scientific development and young scientists in Africa, which aims to outline the major elements that influence young scientists’ scientific performance as well as their development prospects. This text is informative, the translation of which calls for faithfulness as the top consideration. Therefore, this author chooses Nida’s “functional equivalence” as the guiding theory for the translation practice. The overall translation process includes the preparation, the translation practice and the review. In this report, this author analyzes and summarizes the translation practice by adopting the method of case study, and discusses the application of the“functional equivalence” theory in this translation practice from three levels, namely lexicon, syntax and discourse levels, hoping to provide humble reference for the translators of this type of text.Through the analysis and discussion, this author draws the following conclusions.Firstly, the guiding principle of the “functional equivalence” theory is highly compatible with the inherent requirements of the translation of research reports, and it has proven to be very effective and adequate in this translation practice.Secondly,in dealing with the professional knowledge of statistics and finance of the source text, the translator should refer to the parallel texts extensively in order to get a good command of the related knowledge and render a faithful translation. Finally,in the translation of sentences with prominent English language characteristics such as inanimate subject sentences and passive sentences, the methods of reordering and conversion can be adopted to make the translation fluent and logically clear.
