The translation material is excerpted from Odor Localization System Design for Gas Leakage Detection, which was published by Lambert Science Press,Germany in2009.The author Ata Jahangir Moshayedi is an Iranian information engineering expert.Introducing the current research status of global odor localization system and putting forward the design and development of robots for odor localization, this book discusses the impact on the public from the perspective of system application and performance evaluation. As a textbook of Iranian universities, the translated text can be used as both a textbook for information engineering and a guide manual for odor localization researchers, which has certain research and translation value.Due to the limitation of words, the author extracts the first three chapters as the source text to write this report, totaling more than 16,000 words. The source language is formal, logical and professional, which mainly transmits information and reflects objective facts. From the perspective of cross-cultural communication, there are a lot of westernized expressions and cultural habits that need to be dealt with.Microscopically, the text is characterized by complicated sentence structure and generalized passive structure. The translator should adopt appropriate skills to solve these translation problems according to their different characteristics. For example, insufficient professional knowledge,Europeanization of Chinese language, and how to ensure the coherence. In order to vividly reproduce the author’s creative motivation, accurately convey the information with appropriate translation strategies and skills, and meet the demands of the target readers to the greatest extent, the author uses the framework of "Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation",put forward by Li Changshuan in Meaning and Expression: Annotated Texts in Chinese-English Translation, analyzes the problems encountered in practice, and puts forward specific solutions in terms of articles, chapters, paragraphs, sentences and words. For example,in the stage of comprehension, critical thinking and parallel texts are used to help understand the source text.In terms of expression, the concise and flexible language ecology of Chinese should be followed to output concise language and improve the quality. When adapting, according to the translation purpose, language structure and background, the form of the source text should be changed flexibly and the illustrations and diagrams in the source text should be kept,so as to meet the needs of the target readers. The report consists of four chapters. The first chapter presents the project’s background, purposes of the report and the process of the project. The second chapter introduces the analytical framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”and relevant theories. The third chapter is the case study, which analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process from three aspects: comprehension, expression and adaptation, and puts forward solutions. The fourth chapter summarizes the gains and losses of this translation practice. In short, the author has established the macroscopic translation thinking and improved practical ability, further mastered the application of the analytical framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation” to guide translation practice, and practiced and mastered specific translation skills such as footnotes, transliteration. However, because of cross-cultural communication barriers, translationese is inevitable in part of the translation. On the whole, the translation vividly reproduces the design process of the gas positioning platform, accurately conveys the writing intention of the original author, and achieves a good translation effect.
