Fatigue,a state of physical exhaustion caused by prolonged work,leads to inefficiency and even accidents in many tasks and complex working environment.According to the statistics of 2012,the number of death results from overwork including overstraining brain reached up to 0.6 million in China,which makes China has overtaken Japan and become a major country of "karoshi".It can be seen that fatigue seriously endangers people’s health and life,especially in driving and other daily work.Although rest is common way to relieve fatigue,considering the work progress and lots of work like drive and rescue can’t be stopped immediately.medication can relieves fatigue quickly,but the use of medication over a long period will cause side effects.It is urgent to find a method to intervene fatigue.Music therapy,a non-invasive and adjuvant therapy,has been widely applied to clinical neuropsychiatric diseases and sub-health fields in recent years.The scale-free brainwave music presented by our team has the scientific commonality of EEG and music and also has preliminary clinical effect,showing its potential application foreground.Having said that,the effect and mechanism of brainwave music intervening fatigue is still unclear.We explored the effects in relieving fatigue of brainwave music by EEG.Fifty-five subjects were recruited for the experiment and the subjects were randomly divided into four groups.Before music intervened fatigue,we developed an experimental paradigm to induce the participants’ fatigue state in the experiment.we created two piece of brain-wave music named ‘game’ and ‘open-eye’,which are made by the EEG during subjects playing particular vedio games and resting with the eyes open.A piece of normal music has been chosen for relieve the participants’ fatigue state,too.After paradigm induced subjects to fatigue,the subjects listened to different kind of music to relieve fatigue.Both EEG data and behavioral data are collected during the whole experiment.We deleted three cases according to the criteria of 3 delta and missing data.We discussed both the effects in relieving fatigue of different music and the neural mechanism behind through the analysis between the EEG data and behavior data before and after music intervention.The main results are as follows.The results of physical fatigue and mental fatigue scores showed that all three pieces of music had certain effects on relieving fatigue,and game brain-wave music had the most significant effect.In terms of brain mechanisms,the change of average fatigue EEG index R(that is,the power spectral density ratio of theta bands to beta bands)revealed three pieces of music have effects on fatigue,and effects of two brainwave music were significant.Among them,game brainwave music had the greatest effect,which could reduce the index R by 33.78% after listening to music for 5 min.Power spectral density analysis showed that when compared the non-brainwave music with no sound condition,the fatigue index R for the brainwave music group was significantly lower in the whole brain.The fatigue index R for the game brainwave music mainly decreased in the bilateral frontal lobe,the right parietal lobe,and the right temporal lobe.The fatigue index R for the open-eyes brainwave music mainly decreased in the left central sulcus.The results above showed that the brainwave music was more effective than the non-brainwave music in the intervention of fatigue.The decrease of power spectral density in the bilateral frontal lobe,right parietal lobe,right temporal lobe and left central sulcus could be defined as the feature of brain mechanism for fatigue intervention by the brainwave music.We analyzed the correlation between the scores of fatigue factors and the index R.The result illustrated that there were a positive correlation between the physical fatigue and the index R of right temporal lobe in the intervention of game brainwave music.In addition,there was a positive correlation between the mental fatigue and the index R of left central sulcus in the intervention of open-eye brainwave music.Brain network analysis of coherence showed the connections between frontal lobe,central sulcus,temporal lobe,parietal lobe and occipital lobe in the theta band were weakened in the intervention of game brainwave music and open-eye brainwave music,while the connections in the whole brain network were strengthened in the intervention of the other two groups.In addition,the clustering coefficient,average clustering coefficient,global efficiency,local efficiency and average local efficiency were significantly increased after subjects listened game brainwave music,while the path length was significantly shortened.We believe that the intervention of two pieces of brain-wave music is related to the brain’s activity in theta band.The effect of brainwave music was related to the activity of brain in theta band.The decrease of the power spectral density near the right temporal lobe and the left central sulcus may be the characteristics of brainwave intervening fatigue,the decrease of brain network connectivity of coherence in the theta band may be another characteristic of brainwave intervening fatigue.Further analysis combined with fatigue scale also found some results.The regulation of physical fatigue factors may be the mechanism of game brainwave music effectively intervening fatigue,while the regulation of mental fatigue factors may be the mechanism of open-eyes music effectively intervening fatigue.This work can provide some basis for brain-wave music relieving fatigue,and is expected to provide new ways for fatigue intervention.
