This translation report is based on the first eight chapters of The Sun Down Motel, which is an English horror fiction. The report records the process and analysis during the E-C translation practice. The Sun Down Motel tells the story of the young girl Vivian who disappeared years ago and her niece Carly who tried to find her aunt.As typical suspense and horror novel,The Sun Down Motel also has a large amount of descriptive language.According to related study on the original text, horror novels are often rich in description, and through which readers are brought into an atmosphere of weird, suspense, and horror. While the readers are feeling the unique atmosphere of horror novels, they are more likely to be attracted by the plot of the story.According to its mode of communication, verbal description, mental description, and environmental description are extracted. The difficulty of the translation as well as the focus of this translation report is to realize an appropriate translation of the original text while shaping the characters, narrating a story, and creating a horrific atmosphere that target language readers will easily get as the source language readers do.According to the genres and the characteristics mentioned above,it is Gutt’s Relevance Theory of Translation that applied in this translation report.Relevance Theory of Translation believes that because two different languages cannot be completely identical in form,we can look for communicative clues.Through proper processing of these clues, the original author’s intentions may be conveyed more accurately and the reading obstacle of the target language readers may be reduced. In the translation process, communicative clues from the verbal description, mental description, and environment description of the original text are found, and through appropriate translation techniques they are used to characterize the characters, plot the story, and set off the horror atmosphere.Under the guidance of the Relevance Theory of Translation, the communicative clues in the original text can be fully explored, realizing the resemblance in language between the original text and the target text, and thus it makes the target language readers have similar feelings to the original language readers. In translating verbal descriptions in the source text, target readers may also feel the character’s personality and their emotion;from the mental description of the character, target readers should also read the psychological activities of the character in various situations as source readers do;from the environmental description, target readers may sense the weird environment, and experience the intense and horrific atmosphere.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory of Translation, the translation conveys the communicative intention of the author, and also reduces the reader’s processing effort,so that the effect can meet the author’s expectation.
