The Interpretative Theory of Translation believes that the interpreter must go through the stage of deverbalization instead of the corresponding interpretation at the word level in order to truly convey the meaning of the speaker. The research is quantifying the current situation of deverbalization, but the research is mostly in the mode of simultaneous interpretation. The purpose of this research is to study the degree of deverbalization is directly proportional to the quality of the consecutive interpreting. The research of the thesis contains two tests, one being the E-C consecutive interpreting to assess the interpreting quality, the other a sentence test to qualify the degree of deverbalization. Therefore, the author invited 15 Shanghai International Studies University graduate student interpreters to participate in an English-Chinese consecutive interpreting experiment. The experimental result demonstrates that the way the source language is comprehended has an effect on deverbalization in the interpretation of the student interpreters. The higher the scores of consecutive interpreting, the lower the scores of the test for the degree of deverbalization;the higher the degree of deverbalization, the better the interpreting quality. The conclusion of the thesis is that the degree of deverbalization of subjects is in direct proportion to the interpretation quality of the target language.
