It is well known that science and technology are beneficial to a country as they can not only facilitate economic development but also represent a country’s developmental hard power.No matter what achievements will be made in technical areas,scientific and technological talents are always playing a decisive role in the process of scientific and technological development.It follows that it is very important for the younger generation to know famous scientists’ learning activities and experiences,their scientific achievements,and their spirit of study to encourage more people to be dedicated to scientific researches,not afraid of hardships,and make lifetime contributions to the country’s prosperity and stability.This report excerpted the English-Chinese translation project of the translator:Scientists: Extraordinary People Who Altered the Course of History,choosing Chapter Ⅱ from page 24 to page 43 as the object to analyze.The report analyzed the content and language feature of the original text and classified the source text as an informative text on the whole according to the classification criteria of Peter Newmark’s Text Typology.At the same time,it selected Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory as the guiding theory to analyze the translation cases and discussed diverse translation strategies the translator had used to cope with words,phrases,or discourses respectively.This report chose some typical examples of the translation project and then divided the examples into three groups at the lexical level,sentence level,and discourse level.Finally,it studied the examples.The aim of this report is to judge the feasibility and applicability of the communicative translation theory when it is applied to guide the translation of an informative text.Therefore,the translator can do a better job when she encounters a similar text to this one. |
