Yu Shuangmi,or S.M.Yü,has been long regarded as one of 20th-century Chinese library scholars.In terms of library management,he was once in charge of both Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Education Library and Amoy University Library.In terms of library science,he published quite a lot of papers as well as two influential monographs,i.e.,General Introduction to Library Science and Methods of Book Circulation.In terms of journal hosting,he published Amoy University Library Bulletin,and sought for some celebrities’ support.In short,he was definitely an important figure in the history of modern Chinese librarianship.Up to now,there have been few research results on Yu Shuangmi.His whole life is still vague,and the values and flaws of his works have not been thoroughly evaluated.In view of this,by means of literature review,network investigation and field work,this paper tries to make a critical survey of his life,achievements and contributions as comprehensively,meticulously and accurately as possible.Based on all kinds of historical materials,it is found out that Yu Shuangmi successively studied in Zhejiang Provincial No.10 Middle School,Shanghai National University,Chun Chi University,China National University and Futan University.After his graduation from Futan University,he successively worked in Zhengfeng Middle School,Cultural College,National Institute for Compilation and Translation,Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Education,Amoy University,and some other institutions.However,because of his resume scandal,he was forced to quit Chinese librarianship.He returned to his hometown,engaging in education,and suffered much in his later life.Aside from a survey of Yu Shuangmi’s life,this paper summarizes his contributions to modern Chinese librarianship,focusing on his library career,library science researches and journal hosting,and makes an analysis of his academic thoughts,aiming to make clear their basic characteristics and realistic significance.It also makes a textual analysis of his academic works,so as to make a fair evaluation. |
