| As a comprehensive large-scale publication,"The Eastern Miscellany" was founded in1904 and ceased publication in 1948.It lasted for 45 years.Although "The Eastern Miscellany" has been revised several times due to various problems,and even suffered several suspensions,it still bears witness to modern times.The changes in China are also considered to be the longest-lived periodical in old China.The "The Eastern Miscellany" played a vital role in the spread of biology in China.Although China was facing domestic and foreign troubles at the time and the magazine itself faced many difficulties,scientific dissemination has never ceased,which has consolidated the development of modern Chinese biology."The Eastern Miscellany" regards the dissemination of natural sciences as one of its main purposes.The "Concise Constitution" of the inaugural issue of "The Eastern Miscellany" clearly stated that "this magazine is aimed at enlightening the people and contacting East Asia." "Enlightenment",as its name implies,means enlightenment and guidance,and "contact with East Asia" means to clear the channels of communication between China and foreign countries.In particular,during the 10 years when Du Yaquan was the editor-in-chief of Oriental Magazine(1911-1920),the magazine added a "Science Miscellaneous" column,focusing on the promotion of modern Western natural science knowledge,laying the foundation for the dissemination of biological knowledge by Oriental Magazine,and It has become a tradition of running journals for decades.Throughout more than 40 years of materials in "The Eastern Miscellany",it is not difficult to find that each issue of the magazine all guides a direction to spread the world’s latest science and technology.This article conducts a special study on the report of biological knowledge in the Oriental Journal,and its content includes animal and plant science,genetics,microbiology,human body and life,biological evolution,and translation of some Western biological works.According to the historical trend,the change of the magazine’s editor-in-chief,and the editor-in-chief’s publishing philosophy,the report is divided into three periods,namely the period of Wang Yunwu(1904-1911),the period of Du Yaquan(1911-1920),and Qian Zhixiu and Hu Yuzhi.The editor-in-chief period(1920-1931).The volume and focus of its publications are divided into early stage,development stage,and mature stage.It focuses on the editors,editors and authors who promote the spread of "Oriental Journal" biology.Conducted in-depth research on the dissemination characteristics of biological knowledge in "Oriental Journal".Finally,from the perspective of the development of biology communication in the whole of China,I grasped the positioning and characteristics of the biological knowledge dissemination of Oriental Magazine,and found the value embodied in the development of biology communication in Oriental Magazine.The dissemination of natural science by "The Eastern Miscellany" opened the door of old Chinese science to the modernization process with the efforts of a batch of editors and authors.Turning the front page of history,the magazines at that time were all full of slogans of saving the nation and learning from the West.The report of "The Eastern Miscellany" on biological knowledge disseminated advanced biological knowledge and brought the wave of Western fanatical scientific and technological revolution to China.Therefore,"The Eastern Miscellany" has a profound epochal imprint on the development of Chinese biology. |
