As a comprehensive magazine in modern Chinese history,The Eastern Miscellany provided a platform for translation and introduction of foreign literary works.Although recent years witnessed an increasing number of studies on this magazine and the translation and introduction in it,drama translation has largely been ignored.Since drama translation was of great significance at that time in enlightening the large number of common illiterate audience,it deserves more attention.Taking Even-Zohar's polysystem theory as a framework, the thesis mainly discusses the selection of the materials for drama translation in The Eastern Miscellany during the New Culture Movement, and investigates these dramas in terms of the features of drama structure, source cultures and themes.Through the analysis of the translated dramas in The Eastern Miscellany,we discover that the literary works from Russia,Japan as well as from small and oppressed nations took up a large proportion, thus occupying the central position on the selection of source cultures. In terms of themes, those realistic literary works in The Eastern Miscellany that advocated for life received more attention in the New Culture Movement. The selection of these themes met the requirements of the receiving culture.Besides, some Western drama structure was also introduced into China in order to enrich Chinese drama style, all of which made an active contribution to the construction of Chinese new literary repertoire. In conclusion, the study discovers that the selection of the original dramas in The Eastern Miscellany during the New Culture Movement was by no means at random. It was greatly influenced by the needs of the receiving culture. In addition, the features of drama structure were closely related with its position within the target culture.
