People communicate with each other by the virtue of language,and conflict talk as a kind of special language is pervasive in daily life.Teacher-student conflict talk as a part of conflict talk has great influence on teachers,students,schools and even society.Scholars have made numerous researches on conflict talk involving in wife and husband,the elderly and their adult children,doctors and patients,parents and teenagers,teachers and students and others.They study conflict talk from various perspectives of the Impoliteness,the Memetics,the Relevance Theory,the Adaptation Theory and so on.But studies on conflict talk between teachers and students in light of the Adaptation Theory are few.Thus the thesis tries to focus on teacher-student conflict talk from the perspective of the Adaptation Theory.The thesis studies teacher-student conflict talk with the method of qualitative research.In qualitative research,literature research method is used to collect,distinguish,sort out and analyze the relevant literature,and data analysis is used to study linguistic features and reveal reasons for teacher-student conflict talk.Due to the privacy of conflict talk,data are collected from nine TV programs,which mainly focus on teachers and students in senior middle school.The research tries to answer the following two questions: what are the linguistic features of conflict talk between teachers and students? what are the reasons for conflict talk between teachers and students? The research findings are as follows.Firstly,linguistic features are classified into three levels: lexical level,syntactic level and rhetorical level.Linguistic features of teacher-student conflict talk contain negator,derogatory adjectives,swear words,unconventional use of address forms,interjections at lexical level,rhetorical question sentences,reason-asking question sentences,imperative sentences,threat utterances at syntactic level,repetition and parallelism,irony,metaphor at rhetorical level.Secondly,reasons for conflict talk between teachers and students are explored through mental world,social world and physical world in light of the Adaptation Theory.Personality,wishes,emotions,beliefs and motivations are included in the mental world,relationship and school rules are analyzed in the social world,as well as the temporal reference,spatial reference and‘material’ conditions of speech are focused in the physical world.Analyzing teacher-student conflict talk in light of the Adaptation Theory is a relatively new perspective,which would enrich linguistic research in further.In this way,it can not only test the adaptability of the Adaptation Theory,broaden the research field and the scope of application but also make the explanation of the Adaptation Theory more convincing.What’s more,the study of the teacher-student conflict talk could help to establish a harmonious relationship,improve teaching quality,maintain classroom order,create a good teaching and learning atmosphere,etc.
