Analysis Of Conflict Talk In The Television Program From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Conflict talk is a universal and complex social phenomenon in the process of interpersonal communication and it is a dynamic process of conflict caused by the disagreement of interlocutors.In the process of verbal communication,interlocutors' assertions,criticisms,accusations,queries,questions,suspicions,etc.may all trigger the colliding response of the others,and it often leads to unfriendly conversations such as quarrels,disputes,oppositions,refutations,etc.In other words,the conflict talk will reflect the different opinions,attitudes,and perceptions of the interlocutors on something.The study of conflict talk can be traced back to the late 1970 s to the early 1980 s,when Brenneis&Lein,Boggs and others began to pay attention to children's debate or controversy.Subsequently,more and more scholars continued to open up and deepen the research level of conflict talk,and formed various researches from different disciplines such as conversation analysis,cross-cultural communication,and interactive sociolinguistics.Because of the differences in the collection of corpus and analysis methods,the starting point and focus of the study are also different when it comes to issues such as structural features,communication strategies,and research significance of conflict talk.Although many domestic and foreign scholars have already achieved certain results for many types of conflict talks,the survey found that there are few analysis of conflict talk in TV programs from the perspective of adaptation theory.This article is based on Verschueren's Adaptation Theory,and selects the conflict talk between the male and female guests and host in the television program If You Are the One as a corpus,and uses this as a framework to discuss in depth the causes of conflict talk and ways to mitigate conflict talk.According to Verschueren's theory,the use of language is a process of continuous selection,and language users can only accomplish dynamic communication by constantly adapting to the context during the process of communication.People need to adapt to three aspects in the process of communication: physical world,social world and mental world.This article argues that conflict talk arises because the communicating parties fail to adapt to the temporal and spatial references in the physical world;the values,gender differences,etc.in the social world,and the cognitive and emotional aspects of the mental world.These are all important causes of conflict talk.This article also summarizes the ways used to mitigate conflict talk and explains the important role of adaptation theory in conflict talk studies.The author believes that a detailed understanding of the causes of conflict talk is more conducive to the mitigation and resolution of it,and it has a guiding role in improving people's communication ability and harmonious communication.Therefore,this article not only makes new attempts in the theoretical study of conflict talk,but also has some positive significance in guiding people to resolve conflict talk.A more thorough understanding of the seemingly complex phenomenon of conflict talk can avoid the reduction and conflict in interpersonal communication,enhance the sense of intimacy,and create harmonious and wonderful interpersonal relationships,which is more conducive to the construction of a harmonious society.
