Conflict talk is a complex and universal linguistic phenomenon.When people hold different views and opinions on the specific event,conflict talk also comes into being.During daily verbal communication in the process of language communication,conflict talk inevitably occurs in various occasions of interpersonal relationship.In a family,couples are two people who get along day and night.It is hard to avoid all kinds of conflict talks.Marital conflict talk can affect health intimate relationship.If conflict talk can not be resolved timely and effectively,it may cause the relationship ruptures,and eventually lead to a divorce.In addition,it will also bring a series of social problems,such as problem children.Therefore,under the guidance of adaptation theory,this study uses the urban TV series Nothing but Thirty and the first five seasons of Desperate Housewives as the research corpus to propose two research questions.They are as follows: 1.What are the reasons of conflict talk between Chinese and American couples? What are their differences in the causes of conflict talk? 2.What are the strategies to dissolve or mitigate the conflict talk between couples? What are the differences between Chinese and American couples in the use of strategies to resolve or mitigate conflict talk? On the one hand,this study uses quantitative research methods to collect conflict talk between Chinese and American couples.On the other hand,based on adaptation theory,this thesis uses qualitative research methods to analyze the collected 100 episodes of conflicting talk.The scientific way of corpus collection is elaborated in Section 4of Chapter 1.The results show Chinese and American couples do not adapt to the relevant components of context,which is mainly reflected in the three distinct aspects of the mental world,social world and physical world.There is no difference between Chinese and American couples in the causes of conflict talk,however,there are great differences in the distribution of the specific events that cause the conflict between Chinese and American couples.According to the analysis of 100 collected corpus,the author finds out that the topic change,compromise,quits,silence and third-party intervention are the most effective five strategies of dissolving and easing the conflict talk between couples.The study shows that these five strategies can effectively solve or ease the conflict talk between couples.For example,the strategy of silence can effectively stop conflict talk between couples and avoid the aggravation and escalation of conflict talk.However,it does not solve the problem from the root cause of the conflict between couples.Therefore,couples can use these five strategies to resolve or ease the conflict talk.Still,couples need to communicate effectively when they are calm done.They analyze the root causes of conflict and solve the problem.In daily life,the couple should be able to learn to think from another person’s perspective.These practices will increase the happiness quotient in the intimate relationship.From the perspective of adaptation theory,this paper studies the conflict talk between Chinese and American couples,which contributes to the study of conflict talk in specific interpersonal relationships.This thesis also plays a positive role in maintaining healthy intimate relationships and promotes family harmony and stabilizes social development. |
