Abstract/Summary:
Searle’s theory of meaning is an important part of the study of philosophy of language.Influenced by the school of everyday language,Searle believes that the meaning of a sentence is not only the meaning and grammatical structure of words, but also the analysis of the context in which people communicate with language.Searle,as a student of Austin, made a deeper study and advance of speech act theory on the basis of Austin’s speech act theory.Meaning is an important content in the study of philosophy of language. When we analyze language,we should not only analyze the meaning of words and sentences, but also analyze intentionality.Searle believes that meaning is the external manifestation of intentionality.Searle makes a clear distinction between the literal meaning and the speaker meaning.Relative to the literal meaning, the speaker has the speaker’s special intention when making speech acts.Searle analyzed the characteristics of speech acts from the perspective of action. When the speaker makes speech acts, the speaker must have the intention to communicate. In addition, the listener should have the ability to analyze the speaker’s intention.Searle questioned Austin’s generalization and classification of speech acts, and divided them into three categories: speech act, propositional act, behavior with words and deeds, and behavior with words for effect.Searle believed that speech act is the core content of speech act theory.Searle analyzed the twelve rules for the division of speech act,and on the basis of which he divided the speech act into five types.Searle deeply applied the analysis of individual speech acts to the practice of speech communication,in our daily verbal communication, there is a phenmoenon in which the speaker’s meaning is different from its literal meaning.Searle’s indirect speech act theory analyzes the problem,in the theory of indirect speech act,Searle analyzed the generation of indirect speech act and the process of direct speech transmission between speaker and listener.Searle’s theory of meaning provides a new way of thinking and a new perspective for us to study the meaning of language. From the perspective of logic,Searle’s theory of meaning provides a theoretical basis for the study of pragmatic logic, and the theory of indirect speech act provides a new model for pragmatic logic reasoning. In addition,Searle’s theory of meaning closely links the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind, providing a new direction for the study of both.
