An English-Chinese Translation Report Of Mobituaries-Great Lives Worth Reliving(Chapters 4-10)

This report is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is Chapter Four to Chapter Ten of Mobituaries—Great Lives Worth Reliving,coauthored by CBS correspondent and humorist Mo Rocca and American award-winning national investigative journalist Jonathan Greenberg.This book was published in 2019,and the official Chinese version of the book has not been published in China so far.It summarized and commented on details of life of the deceased.These objects of selected chapters include politician Tom Paine,civil rights pioneer Elizabeth Jennings,menswear guru Beau Brummel,and Siamese twins Eng and Chang.The translator mainly illustrated the difficulties in the process of translation from the aspects of the lexical level,rhetorical device and punctuation.At lexical level,the translator adopted the method of adding annotation and semantic extension for the cultural-loaded words and phrase collocations formed in the cultural accumulating of foreign countries.Three basic methods are adopted in the translation of rhetorical devices: literal translation,cultural substitution and free translation.There are significant differences between English and Chinese in punctuation,therefore the translator uses the translation method of retaining,omission and conversion to translate dashes and ellipsis,which are frequently used in the original text.The translator hopes to express the original author’s respect and memory for ordinary people and things,so that more people can understand the stories behind them and at the same time explore the similarities and differences between western obituaries and Chinese obituaries.
