A Study Of Interpreting Strategies Of Chinese Idioms In Foreign Affairs Interpretation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This thesis studies the interpreting strategies of Chinese idioms in foreign affairs interpretation from the perspective of Skopos theory.Chinese idioms,due to its various meanings,unique structures and the immediacy feature of foreign affairs activity.Therefore,it is difficult to interpret Chinese idioms in foreign affairs occasions.For a long time,scholars have studied the interpretating strategies of Chinese idioms from different perspectives,but few researches study the interpreting strategies of Chinese idioms from the perspective of Skopos Theory.Skopos Theory holds that interpretation should be considered under the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.This thesis explores interpretating strategies of Chinese idioms from the perspective of the three rules of Skopos Theory,focusing on three questions:(1)In foreign affairs interpretation,what interpretating strategies can be adopted to interpret Chinese idioms under the skopos rule?(2)In foreign affairs interpretation,what interpretating strategies can be adopted to interpret Chinese idioms under the coherence rule?(3)In foreign affairs interpretation,what interpretating strategies can be adopted to interpret idioms under the fidelity rule?Based on the interpretation texts of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s speech at press conferences from 2016 to 2019,this thesis uses the method of qualitative analysis and case analysis.The results show that:(1)Under the skopos rule,the strategies of explanatory translation and paraphrasing can be adopted during the process of interpreting Chinese idioms.(2)Under the coherence rule,the strategies of addition and omission can be adopted during the process of interpreting Chinese idioms.(3)Under the fidelity rule,the strategies of literal and idiomatic translation can be adopted during the process of interpreting Chinese idioms.This thesis explores the interpreting strategies of Chinese idioms from the perspective of Skopos theory.On the one hand,it is expected to help interpreters choose the interpreting strategies of Chinese idioms in foreign affairs interpretation better.On the other hand,it is expected to enrich the application of Skopos Theory in foreign affairs interpretation.
