Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is based on Mill’s work, and on the basis of analyzing and drawing on the existing theoretical results,it specifically conducts a systematic analysis of Mill’s utilitarian view of justice. For a long time, justice has been one of the important themes of people’s attention, and its connotation has been continuously enriched.Among the many interpretations of justice,Mill’s utilitarian view of justice is very representative and the most controversial idea, but it still has high research value.Mill believes that the main reason why utilitarianism is not accepted is people’s misunderstanding of the concept of justice, and there are contradictions and conflicts between utilitarianism and justice. For this reason,Mill constructed his own utilitarian view of justice to prove that utilitarianism and justice are related, and the two are not contradictory. This thesis is divided into three parts that are connected to each other. The first chapter focuses on the theoretical tracing of Mill’s utilitarian view of justice, including the enlightenment of Mill’s view of justice by Aristotle,Hume,Bentham and Kant. The second chapter explores and analyzes the content of Mill’s utilitarian view of justice. From the definition to the interpretation of the basic connotation,to the specific exposition of the application principle,Mill’s argumentation of the relationship between utilitarianism and justice can be seen. The third chapter mainly criticizes the utilitarian view of justice through the understanding of the basic connotation and realization principle of Marx’s view of justice, and then realizes the criticism of Mill’s view of justice. In short,in Mill’s view, utility and justice are compatible.Justice is a moral obligation that contains rights. It is a completely mandatory obligation.Justice is based on utilitarianism. The ultimate goal of justice is to maximize social welfare. At the same time,Mill’s view of justice is not perfect, and there are still many shortcomings, but its value cannot be completely denied. At least his view of justice has a profound influence on the thinking of later generations and has its unique characteristics. His uniqueness is that he is still struggling to find a balance between justice and utilitarianism. He has incorporated some viewpoints into the utilitarian system and tried to reconcile these theories, which has also made his theory valued in the long river of history.
