A Study Of Hu Xiansu’s Calligraphy

Hu Xiansu is not only famous for his achievements in Botany,but also in poetry and calligraphy.There are many articles about Hu Xiansu,but none of them focus on his calligraphy.Hu Xiansu was born in a scholarly family and lived in an age when writing with a brush was his daily life.Among the literati who lived in contact with him,most of them were famous for their calligraphy,such as Shen Zengzhi and Wu Changshuo,who left many traces of poetry and ink.Hu Xiansu’s calligraphy pursues high antiquity,and his works are often full of antiquity.At the same time,they integrate the Confucian temperament of traditional Chinese literati,which is thought-provoking and worthy of careful appreciation.Hu had received both strict traditional Chinese education and systematic western education,which shared the common characteristics of senior intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.In addition,as an authoritative scholar,erudite expert,famous botanist and President of National Chung Cheng University at that time,Hu Xiansu had rich life experience,extensive knowledge,and extensive friends.He also had uniqueness.Therefore,the study of Hu Xiansu’s calligraphy has important value and significance.In addition to his "career"(Botany),he can also develop his "ambition"(poetry,calligraphy,etc.),which is of great significance to the current young students.Among the calligraphy works left by Hu Xiansu,he almost wrote his own poems and essays,which are in the true sense of "I write my heart".It is in line with the theme of "both literature and art" and "I write my heart" in the current calligraphy exhibition.Hu Xiansu was born in an era without calligraphy exhibition,but he insisted on the calligraphy creation of "I write my heart" all his life,which is also an inspiration and reflection for the calligraphy learning and creation of contemporary calligraphers.This paper tries to analyze Hu Xiansu’s calligraphy world from the perspectives of his calligraphy background and origin,his calligraphy style,his calligraphy friends and his calligraphy thoughts.
