A Practice Report On Sentence Patterns Conversion In English-Chinese Translation Of Evaluating International Public Health Issues(Excerpts)

In the face of the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020,some countries’ health systems are on the edge of paralysis and collapse,which has regained people’s great attention and concern.Apart from the outbreak,the world faces many other problems that affect the health of citizens since there are still health inequality and inefficient medical services.Therefore,it is necessary to evaluate the health system for the progress of each country’s health cause.For this reason,the translation is selected from Evaluating International Public Health Issues: Critical Reflections on Diseases and disorders,Policies and Practices,edited by Mbuso Precious Mabuza M.D,expounding the dilemma of public health from the aspects of biomedicine,society,legislation and economy,and putting forward some profound and original views on strengthening health system.The translation text is related to public health,representing the characteristics of information text including formal style,professional knowledge,complex sentence structure,which has a lot of translation difficulties to deal with.Based on the analysis of translation,the difficulties in translation can be divided into three categories,which are frequent use of coordination structures,prepositional structures and complex special sentence patterns.They are further respectively subdivided into a large number of homogeneous coordination structures and heterogeneous coordination structures,compound prepositional phrase and preposition plus clause pattern,and complicated subject clause of“It”sentence and adverbial verbosity of “There be”sentence.Through the comparison of parallel materials and other professional references,the differences of English and Chinese sentence patterns in this kind of text are found more prominent.In order to guarantee the readability and accuracy of the translated text,this paper adopts the method of sentence patterns conversion and puts forward the corresponding translation strategies by analyzing typical sentences.In order to solve the problem of high occurrence of coordinate structures,the methods of combination and division translations are adopted,and the methods of part-of-speech conversion and inversion translation are adopted for prepositional structures,the extraposition conversion and the combined conversion are adopted for special sentence patterns.The above methods have greatly improved the quality of translation,and I hope that this report can be a reference for other translators in related fields.
