An E-C Translation Report On Smart Clothes And Wearable Technology(Excerpts)

Since the reform and opening-up,Western advanced scientific and technological knowledge has flooded into China,giving rise to a climax of translation of English for science and technology in multiple fields.Similarly,with the rapid advancement of science and technology,besides China’s effort of self-reliance,it is necessary to introduce foreign advanced textile technology,in order to achieve the upgrade of the traditional textile industry.And in the course of professional teaching in textile colleges and universities,foreign reading materials can also be introduced appropriately.For the purpose of language practice and service,the translator renders chapter 14 “Digital embroidery techniques for smart clothing” and chapter 15“Developments in digital print technology for smart textiles” form Smart clothes and wearable technology — an English textbook for graduate of Institute of Technology,Wuhan Textile University—into Chinese,introducing the development of digital embroidery technology and digital printing technology.Text of English for Science and Technology is difficult to understand as it is a highly formal practical writing with multiple terms,primarily aiming to convey scientific knowledge and advanced technological achievements.EST Text of Textile has the general features of EST text-focusing on describing the principles and applications of science and technology through quantitative analysis,adopting an objective,rigorous and logical writing style.Therefore,the translator should focus on the faithful transmission of the original content in translation,which should not only ensure the accuracy of the language,but also take into account the readability of the text.On the basis of the author’s translation practice and the translation research on English for Science and Technology,this paper analyzes the lexical,syntactic and non-verbal features of the original text.In terms of vocabulary,the paper puts forward translation methods of technical words and semi-technical words.From the aspects of nominalization,passive voice and compound sentence,this paper probes into the translation strategies of sentences of English for Science and Technology,including sequential translation and reverse translation in accordance with the internal logic of the sentence.In terms of non-verbal expression,emphasis is placed on the translation and annotation of illustrations to provide the target readers with richer background information.This translation practice report makes an in-depth analysis on the stylistic and linguistic characteristics of EST text,and proposes relevant translation skills and strategies on the basis of the author’s self-reflection,hoping to offer some guidance to researchers and technicians engaged in EST research and translation.
