| Translation compensation is an effective means to make up for translation loss.Chinese and Western scholars have studied translation compensation and put forward their own effective compensation strategies, among which translation theorists Hervey and Higgins have classified four compensation strategies, namely, compensation in kind, compensation in place, compensation by merging and compensation by splitting. This translation material is an excerpt from Rewriting Humour in Comic books, the work of professor Dimitris Asimakoulas.Rewriting Humour in Comic books belongs to informative text. The frequent use of passive voices and complex sentences make the structure of the source text flexible.Through the research of text type and relevant backgrounds, the translator conducts detailed analyses of specific examples from the four dimensions above mentioned to make up for the losses in information, meaning, pragmatic functions, cultures. This thesis explores the applicability of compensation strategies in translation practice and the effect of compensation on semantic loss.Through this translation practice, the translator draws the conclusion: The compensation in kind and compensation in place are mainly used for word concept conversion and word order adjustment to compensate for the semantic loss in the source text.Meanwhile, when involved in untranslatable cultural and language differences, translator tends to adopt compensation by merging and compensation by splitting to make up for the cultural vacancy. |
