A Report On E-C Translation Of A Man Of Parts(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

A Man of Parts is a biographical novel written by contemporary British novelist David Lodge about the life story and experiences of British writer Herbert George Wells.The novel aims to commemorate and pay tribute to Herbert George Wells by presenting his brilliant life.On the basis of historical facts,A Man of Parts adopts flexible and diversified writing techniques to give fictional descriptions,which shows its different characteristics from the traditional biography.As for A Man of Parts,how to both vividly reproduce the author David Lodge’s writing style and faithfully to present the writer-protagonist Wells’ life story and the cultural and historical background in the TT is a challenge for the translator.Based on the E-C translation of A Man of Parts,under the guidance of Eco-translatology,the report analyzes the features of the source text,involving linguistic features,cultural features and communicative features respectively.According to the “three-dimensional transformation” emphasized by Eco-translatology,the report discusses the important role that the various translation methods and techniques including “extending”,“adoption of Chinese four-character phrases”,“the division of long and difficult sentences”,“conversion of passive sentences into active ones”,“annotations within the text and outside the text”,“amplification” and “substitution” play in adapting to the translational eco-environments of both the SL and the TL and achieving a higher degree of holistic adaptation and selection.It is argued that Eco-translatology is much helpful to the translation of A Man of Parts and other biographical novels.
