| This is a translation project report.The source text is selected from the third chapter “The Turbo Boost: Exponential Development Technologies(Part II)” of The Future Is Faster Than You Think: How Converging Technologies Are Transforming Business,Industries,and Our Lives,co-authored by Peter H.Diamandis and Steven Kotler.This book mainly revolves around the current development of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence,virtual reality,and blockchain,as well as the great impact of converging technologies on our society.As an informative text,the textual material is logical and concise,in which abstract nouns,noun phrases and impersonal subject sentences are quite common.In the process of solving translation difficulties,translation shifts are unavoidably used to deal with part of speech,the units and the structure of sentences.Especially class shifts,unit shifts and structure shifts are resorted to at high frequency to shift nouns and adjectives to verbs,adjective phrases to separate sentence units,and impersonal sentences to personal sentences.Within the framework of Catford’s translation shifts,the translator strives to convey the information and concepts of the source text with appropriate expressions through the lens of lexical and syntactic analysis.This report falls into five parts: The first part introduces the translation project,including its background,significance and structure.The second part expounds on the background of the source text,including its authors,the main content and the analysis of the selected part of the original text.The third part elaborates on Catford’s shift theory and its application in this translation project.The fourth part analyzes and discusses the translation difficulties of adjectives,abstract nouns,noun phrases,passive voices,impersonal sentences and their corresponding solutions under the guidance of Translation Shifts.The fifth part summarizes the experience from the project. |
