Reading plays a vital role in high school English classes.Although most teachers are aware of the importance of developing English reading ability,the sole teaching method reduces students’ learning enthusiasm.In 2018,the Ministry of Education issued The 2017 Edition of English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School.The teaching goal of training students’ comprehensive application of English,which was emphasized in the past,had been replaced by the core literacy of the English subject.The new curriculum standard based on the core literacy requires students to have subjective initiative in the learning process;and the new standard also requires teachers to be concerned with students’ sense of cooperation in the teaching process.Under the background of the education policy,the jigsaw method plays an important part in cultivating students’ sense of cooperation and team spirit in the learning process as a teaching method in cooperative learning.At the same time,cooperative learning environment is easier to bring students successful experience than competitive learning environment,so as to enhance students’ self-efficacy.So,this thesis studies the application of the jigsaw method to English reading teaching in senior high school.The thesis analyses the feasibility of the jigsaw method in English reading teaching in senior high schools from the perspectives of the current situation,the existing problems in English reading teaching in senior high schools and the requirements of English reading under the core literacy.Based on constructivism theory,cooperative teaching theory and goal structure theory,the thesis designs an experimental teaching for its application in English reading teaching in senior high schools.The thesis first carries out a questionnaire survey on the current situation of senior high school students’ English reading.It then selects two classes divided into experimental class and control class as the research participants through the pretest.During the study,the experimental class uses the jigsaw method for teaching,and the control class utilizes the general teaching method.Based on the results of the pretest and post-test,questionnaire survey and interview about the self-efficacy,this thesis mainly explores the following questions:(1)What is the change in senior high school students’ English reading performance through the specific use of the jigsaw method?(2)What are the problems arisen in the practical use of the jigsaw method during the teaching period? How to cope with it?(3)How does the reading teaching using the jigsaw method affect students’ self-efficacy?With the jigsaw method,the English reading performance and self-efficiency of most students have been significantly improved.This shows that the jigsaw method is useful for students to understand the text information and improve their English reading level.At the same time,the jigsaw method can effectively strengthen the interaction within the students and optimize the learning atmosphere,thus deepening the teaching effect,promoting the students’ cooperation consciousness and cooperative communication competence,and improving the students’ enthusiasm for English reading.However,there are still some problems in the application of the jigsaw method in English reading teaching of senior high schools,such as students overuse their mother tongue,classroom order is sometimes difficult to control and so on.Therefore,when teaching with the jigsaw method,reasonable grouping and teaching materials should be considered;and the teacher should choose effective use of evaluation means to optimize teaching effect.
