Recent years have seen frequent cultural exchanges between China and the international community with more international students coming to China for study and exchanges. In order to let more people know about China-international cultural exchanges, the author invited a Ugandan student,Sarah Mc Lachlan, who has been in China for 6 years to share her view on China and introduce the social and economic relations between two sides.Sarah gave a live speech and the author finished the on-site consecutive interpretation without script under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory. From the perspective of the triangular model of the Interpretive Theory, namely, comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression,this report analyzes how interpreter dealt with problems that arose in the interpreting process to complete a successful delivery without script. The Interpretive Theory believes that interpreter should interpret meaning, not literal symbols, and deverbalization represents the most important and distinctive point of this theory.Through the analysis of specific cases at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels, the author found that to properly convey the intended meaning of source language,it is necessary to use interpreter’s cognitive supplements, combining skills like omissions, simplifications, paraphrasing, information amplification,condensation,reconstruction,etc..That is how deverbalization is achieved for the purpose of communication. This is particularly true to long speech, appropriate omission and condensation are recommended to improve the quality and efficiency of interpretation. This article demonstrates the specific guidance and application of the Interpretive Theory in interpreting process, and it also analyzes the characteristics of Ugandan English and its impact on the interpretation process, hoping it can be a reference and shed light on future research on related English interpretation.
