| Effort Models of Interpreting, proposed by the renowned French scholar Daniel Gile, has been sought after worldwide since 1995.Recently,research on Effort Models of Interpreting has not only extended from simultaneous interpreting(SI)to consecutive interpreting(CI),but also to sophisticated application-oriented researches such as simulation games and machine learning to improve efforts allocation and work efficiency. However, concerning researches on cognitive overloading phenomena, most of them are based on one single SI or CI task, and so far there has been few contrastive studies on English-Chinese SI and Chinese-English CI.From 16 June to 28 July,2019,the author was privileged to serve as an interpreter for China-Aid Samoa Project. While carrying out various interpreting tasks under different circumstances, she pinpointed lots of errors and problems of the same kind,be it complex syntax or comparative simple grammar including mistranslation and pragmatic errors.Since interpreting process varies from different interpreting modes, what are the same and different components for English-Chinese SI and Chinese-English CI in terms of effort allocation? Is there any shared ground for both types to learn from each other?Guided by Gile’s Effort Models of interpreting, this report is going to adopt cued retrospection and induction to conduct contrastive analyses of cognitive overloading problems encountered on site.Specifically, the report will at first compare and analyze the similarities and dissimilarities of efforts allocation in the process of two different interpreting modes and then exemplify such coping strategies as reproducing and explaining to overcome problems namely mistranslation, redundancy and pragmatic errors. With these efforts, the interpreter can effectively respond to the accumulated information and growing saturated cognitive capacity to maximize the information recovery and minimize the efforts cost.As a result, quick, accurate and precise target speeches are expected to be delivered, smooth exchanges between different participants be enabled and the implementation of relevant projects be facilitated. |
