| In daily life, facial expressions can express and convey personal emotional state and social intention, which is of great significance to accurately identify and evaluate other’s facial expressions and social activities.Previous researchers have mostly studied facial expressions in isolation, but in reality, people receive a variety of signals, often accompanied by a variety of background information when identifying other people’s expressions.Sometimes facial expressions can also convey vague emotional information,or even make it impossible for people to correctly recognize emotions through facial expressions. For example,an individual who is ashamed may try to conceal his emotions with other facial expressions. Therefore, the information conveyed by facial expressions is not always reliable. Background cues play a role in clarifying the emotions of facial expressions. The research of facial expression recognition also showed that people were influenced by the background(such as scene, body posture, language, culture, etc). When recognizing other’s facial expressions.Language context,as one of the background factors, also has an impact on facial expression recognition.Previous studies on this direction were not sufficient.Although research confirmed the existence of language context effect in individual recognition of neutral or surprised expressions, there was no further discussion on the mechanism of facial expression recognition in which individuals had a clear meaning to other emotions in the language context. The influence of personality characteristics of self-esteem on the process of facial expression recognition is not taken into account. Therefore, this research mainly explored the influence of language context information in the process of facial expression recognition and the role of self-esteem in the process, and explored the effect of emotional valence and emotional category processing through different task requirements. This study mainly explored the influence of language context on facial expression recognition through three experiments. In Experiment 1,the emotional potency scoring task was used to investigate the influence of emotional language context on neutral facial expression recognition. The results show that the emotional valence of language context affects the valence score of neutral facial expressions, and the valence score of neutral facial expressions after active context(happy context)is significantly higher than that after passive context(anger context and fear context). In Experiment 2,the task of judging the potency of facial expressions was used to investigate whether emotional categories would also be processed unconsciously when the emotional category did not need to be processed, and to investigate the influence of emotional language context on the valance judgment of facial expression recognition. The results showed that(1)the individual has a higher correct rate of recognition of facial expression emotions and a faster response under the condition that the language context is consistent with the emotional valence of facial expressions.(2)The individual’s recognition of angry expressions found that the judgment of angry facial expressions is also affected by the same emotional valence and the same emotional category. In Experiment 3,the subjects with high and low self-esteem were screened out by Rosenberg self-esteem,and the contextual materials and facial expressions with clear emotional meaning were used to ask the subjects with high and low self-esteem to carry out the task of emotion recognition,to investigate whether the emotional valance would be processed unconsciously when the emotional valance did not need to be processed, and whether emotional contextual information affected the emotional recognition of facial expressions and the role of self-esteem in the recognition process. The results show that:(1)Under the condition that the context is consistent with the category of facial expressions and emotions, individuals have higher recognition accuracy and faster response.(2)The recognition of facial expressions is influenced by the consistency of emotional valence and emotional category.(3)For individuals with high self-esteem,there is no significant difference in the correct rate of facial expression recognition under the condition that context and facial expressions are consistent and inconsistent, while the correct rate of individuals with low self-esteem is significantly different in the process of facial expression recognition.According to the above experimental results, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)Under the initiation of different emotional types of context, the recognition of neutral facial expressions was affected by emotional contextual valance, and the valance score of neutral facial expressions tended to be consistent with the contextual valance.Compared with negative context, the valance score of neutral face in positive context was higher.(2)The individual was influenced by language context in the process of facial expression recognition, and there was a significant language context effect, which showed the consistency of language context and facial expression emotional valance and emotional categories promoted facial expression recognition.(3)Emotion potency and emotion category act together on individual facial expression recognition.(4)The personality characteristics of self-esteem play a moderating role in the influence of language context on facial expression recognition.Individuals with high self-esteem are less affected by language context emotional information, while individuals with low self-esteem have significant language context effects. |
