Currently,senior high school English teachers’ cultural teaching awareness has been of wide concern.The English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017 Edition)puts forward the goal of promoting cultural teaching awareness and the cultural background knowledge should be integrated into foreign language teaching.Even though many teachers have attained a certain cultural teaching awareness in university,after they have stepped onto the platform of teaching,their cultural teaching awareness declined,so high school English teachers’ cultural teaching awareness is thought-provoking.This thesis investigates and studies the cultural teaching awareness of senior high school English-language teachers.The purpose of this thesis is to provide a reference for strengthening the cultural teaching in senior high school English teaching.Based on Sapir-Whorf hypothesis,intercultural communication theory and Tyler’s curriculum theory,this study investigates 128 teachers’ cultural teaching awareness in five senior high schools in Beihai,Guangxi Province.According to the analysis of the questionnaire,12 English teachers are randomly selected for interview.In the light of the questionnaire of Shang Liyuan(2018),the questionnaire of high school English teachers’ cultural teaching awareness is modified and divided into four dimensions: goal awareness,implementation awareness,resource awareness and evaluation awareness.The research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current situation of senior high school English teachers’ cultural teaching awareness?(2)What are the factors that affect senior high school English teachers’ cultural teaching awareness?The results show that: First,senior high school English teachers have strong cultural teaching awareness,but lack cultural knowledge and professional quality.Due to heavy teaching tasks and family responsibilities,teachers have no more time and energy to supplement cultural knowledge,so they neglect the transfer of cultural knowledge in teaching.Second,senior high school English teachers’ awareness of cultural teaching is not affected by gender,teaching years and educational background,but there are significant differences between teachers of different teaching years.Novice teachers are influenced by college cultural education and have stronger implementation awareness.From the perspective of teachers,this study makes up for the deficiency of previous studies which only focused on students.The purpose of this paper is to strengthen the importance of culture teaching through the study of teachers’ cultural awareness,improve the teaching skills of senior high school English teachers,and offer support for the reform and development of senior high school English education.
