An Eye Movement Study On The Influence Of Background Music And Article Emotional Consistency On Reading Articles Of Different Lengths

Since ancient times,music has played an important role in people’s lives.In the1960 s,researchers paid attention to the issue of background music affecting learning.But to this day,researchers are still arguing on this issue,and there is no conclusion.The reading activity under background music is a complex cognitive process that integrates auditory and visual information.In the process of understanding the influence of background music on reading,it is necessary to consider not only the nature of music and the nature of reading materials,but also the influence of the relationship between music and reading materials on the reading process.This study uses eye tracking technology to observe and analyze the differences in eye movement patterns between background music and article emotional consistency in reading long and short articles.The research was divided into two experiments.The experiment selected 48 students from a university in Shenyang as the research subjects.Experiment with a pair of background music and the emotional consistency of the article to explore the difference in eye movement in long article reading.The design is 3 background music(happy music,sad music,no music)× 2 article types(happy article,sad article)The two-factor design within the subject.Experiment 2explored the influence of background music and article emotional consistency on short article reading.It was designed as 3 background music(happy music,sad music,no music)× 2 article type(happy article,sad article)two-factor subjects Inside design.In this study,the total fixation time,fixation times,reading speed and average saccade amplitude were used as dependent variables,and the following conclusions were drawn.1.In the long article reading,under the happy background music condition,the background music and the article mood are consistent,which has a great interference on the reading;Under the condition of sad background music,the emotional consistency of background music and the article has little interference on the article reading.That is,sad music has less interference on long reading.2.In the reading of short articles,the background music and the mood of the article are consistent under the condition of happy background music,which has little interference on the reading of short articles;Under the condition of sad background music,the emotional consistency of background music and the article has a great interference on the reading effect of the article.That is to say,cheerful music has less interference on short story reading.3.The same mood of background music and articles has less interference on the reading of long articles than short articles.There is no significant difference in the interference effect of the inconsistency of background music and article mood on the reading of long articles and short articles.
