In the era of media integration,music is at your fingertips,and reading is increasingly linked to listening to music.Learning or reading while listening to music has become the habit of students.Academic reading is the embodiment of academic literacy,and it is an important act to obtain academic resources and promote academic exchanges.When the environment is music,will academic reading be improved or worse?Does the individual’s preference for reading under background music have an impact on reading?With regard to the influence of background music on reading,existing studies have reported different results,ranging from helping reading comprehension to interfering reading comprehension.In view of the lack of evidence of the influence of background music on academic reading and the research that considers both reading effect and emotional experience,this paper studies the influence of background music and individual background music preference on reading comprehension effect and emotional experience,and provides eye movement evidence.In the first study,43 college students were taken as the research object,and academic materials were taken as the research object,so as to explore the influence of background music on academic reading comprehension and emotional experience.The results show that compared with the situation without background music,background music will interfere with reading comprehension,reading speed will slow down,reading time will increase,fixation times,total fixation time and first fixation time will increase.There is no significant difference in pleasure,arousal,dominance,positive emotions and negative emotions with background music compared with those without background music.Pleasure and arousal can significantly predict the reading effect.In the second study,45 college students were taken as the research objects,and academic materials were taken as the research objects.The 2*2 mixed experimental design explored the effects of background music arousal(high/low arousal)and individual background music preference(reading preference with or without background music)on academic reading comprehension and emotional experience.The results show that the reading performance of high-arousal background music is better than that of low-arousal music,and the reading performance of the group with background music preference is better than that of the group without background music preference.Background music preference and background music arousal have significant interactive effects on reading comprehension.In the music preference group without background,the reading effect of high-arousal music is significantly better than that of low-arousal music;There is no significant difference in reading effect between high-arousal music and low-arousal music in the background music preference group.Under the condition of high arousal music,there is no significant difference in reading effect between the group with and without background music preference;Under the condition of low arousal music,the reading effect of the group with background music preference is significantly better than that of the group without background music preference.The arousal of background music has a significant effect on arousal and dominance in emotions,but has no significant effect on other emotional dimensions.Compared with the influence of background music arousal on reading comprehension,background music preference has a greater influence on reading comprehension.To sum up,it is beneficial for reading comprehension to choose background music suitable for one’s awakening level.Individuals with background music preference will weaken the interference of inappropriate background music on reading comprehension,while individuals without background music preference are easily disturbed by background music on reading comprehension.Therefore,the study suggests that individuals with background music preference can choose background music to arouse their emotions,so that they can concentrate on academic reading and promote reading effect,and the best effect is to choose high-arousal music;Individuals who have no preference for background music should avoid listening to music while reading to avoid interference,or choose music with higher arousal level to balance the interference caused by the discomfort of background music. |
