As one of the most famous comedic film directors in France,Jacques Tati’s works enjoy a high reputation around the world.In recent years,the aesthetic studies on Tati have become more complicated and diversified.Some scholars even believe that Tati’s position in the history of film is closer to Godard`s than that of directors who are good at comedy,such as Chaplin and Buster Keaton.That is to say,Tati’s genius is not just for the comedy,but for the whole cinema.On the basis of summarizing the audio-visual aesthetic features of Tati’s works,this dissertation abides by methods of literature research and case analysis to conclude the differences between Tati’s five films and other comedy works.Moreover,it briefly summarizes aesthetic styles of poetry films,expounds to contrast the similarities between Tati’s works and poetry films,as well as the characteristics of "humorous poetry films".This dissertation is divided into three chapters,the first chapter mainly analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of Jacques Tati’s films.Based on his audio-visual creation,this chapter summarizes Tati’s aesthetic techniques and features,which are different from other comedy creators,including implied presences,decentralized speeches,and the rhythm in the picture.In the second chapter puts Tati’s works in the horizontal axis of comedy films,The differences and connections from the perspective of aesthetics between Tati’s works and a series of comedy films can be summed up according to Tati’s comedy properties: the decentralization of characters,the dilution of comedy narratives,and the creation of comedy atmosphere,etc.On this basis,the third chapter discusses whether Tati’s works can be involved in the category of poetry films by putting Tati’s audio-visual aesthetic features in the sequence of poetry films,sorting out the poetic expressions in the film,and discussing the deep connection/ relationship between comedies and poetry films.The last chapter is a systematic summary of the foregoing and answers questions left above.Through refining the aesthetic characteristics of Jacques Tati’s films,this dissertation attempts to discuss the update,he brought to comedies and summarize the pedigree of similar comedy films.Moreover,his inheritance of poetic films,and its connection with poetry films are explicated.Finally,a novel panorama of Tati and film aesthetics is expected to be presented in this dissertation. |
