A Report On The E-C Translation Of The End Of October(Excerpts)

The report is written based on translation strategies of dialogues between characters in a novel.The source text is excerpted from The End of October,which is a new thriller written by Lawrence Wright.The story is set in a global plague crisis in the last century.The author selects the first three chapters of the book as the translation material,which mainly involves the process of case discovery and virus identification before the outbreak.Novel is a literary genre that centers on the shaping of characters’ images.After a comprehensive analysis of textual features,the author decides to take dialogue translation as the research subject.Under the theoretical framework,the author chooses Halliday’s interpersonal function theory as guidance.The interpersonal function is one of the three metafunctions of language advanced by Halliday within his SFL’s framework.It mainly concerns a representation of the speaker’s attitude,status,and motivation and also expresses the role relationship associated with the situation.According to Halliday’s SFL,the linguistic devices to realize interpersonal meaning are mood and modality systems.From the perspective of interpersonal function,this report analyzes the text with mood and modal analysis as the starting point,and discusses how to achieve the readability of the translation and accurately reproduce the interpersonal function of the original text on the basis of ensuring the accurate transmission of the original information.From the perspective of mood,five translation strategies are proposed: mood choices,pronoun conversion,extension of meaning,omission of subject and amplification of modal particle.From the perspective of modality,modal value choices and omission of subject are proposed.This report mainly discusses the strategies of dialogue translation.It is hoped that the research results can provide effective reference value for translation scholars.It is expected that more translators experts and researchers will devote themselves to the study of such works in the future and make greater contributions to the national translation cause.
