| For ages, people have paid a lot of attention to the literature translation and have madegreat progress in the aspects of translation practice and theory research. However, as a branchof literary translation, the translation of children’s literary works attracts less attention fromthe scholars. Children read literature at an early age, which is helpful for them to extend theirthoughts, arouse imagination and increase reading areas and more over has a far-reachinginfluence on their self-building. With the increasingly frequent communication betweendifferent countries, the number of children’s literature translation is rising year by year. Dueto this profound phenomenon, it is necessary to make further researches on the children’sliterature translation.Actually, children own specific psychological characteristics and thinking models and aremore willing to accept the visualized, lively and interesting things, so we often teach childrenby using all kinds of vivid, plump, believable characters in the children’s literature. Therefore,the children’s literature translation is successful or not, would be regarded as a reflectionwhether the translator has effectively conveyed the vivid personality or established the typicalchildren’s character image, or foiled the relationship between figures.Linguistics plays an important role in the development of translation theories. In thenumerous linguistics theories, the most widely used one in the field of translation is Halliday’ssystemic function grammar. One of the theory’s metafunctions is the interpersonal meaning,which refers to the people who use a certain language to establish and maintain the relationships with others and to influence other people’s subjective judgment or evaluation soas to seek or change others’ opinions. Mood and modality systems are mainly used to revealthe interpersonal relationships or reflect power and position and other interpersonal meanings.Therefore, the study of the interpersonal function plays an important role to explain therelationship of characters in the children’s literature works.Based on the features of Halliday’s interpersonal theory and the notable features ofchildren’s literature, the author will use corpus analysis tools to collect the relevant data of themodality and mood system from the original text of Charlotte’ Web and its two Chineseversions of Ren Rongrong and Kang Xin. By comparing the similarities and differences of therepresentation, this thesis tries to discuss the differences of the language using between thetwo translators and at the same time a good explanation to the vivid characters and therelationship between the characters, which can also be gained by studying the use of thelanguages. Through comparison and analysis, we can see in the whole story that both of KangXin and Ren Rongrong take the use of modal operators and mood types into considerationwhen they translated the work, but the interpersonal meaning achieved in Ren Rongrong’sversion is much closer to the source text and has successfully achieved the speech functionsand the interpersonal meaning of the source text. This thesis attempts to provide a new pointof view on Children’s literary translation from the perspective of interpersonal function basedon the theory of systemic function grammar. |
