A Report On The Translation Of Mood And Modality Of The Fantasy Novel The House In The Cerulean Sea(Excerpts) From Interpersonal Function Perspective

This report is a case study of the E-C translation.Based on the translation of The House in the Cerulean Sea,the latest masterpiece by American bestselling author TJ Klune,the translator analyzes and summarizes the problems and difficulties in translation practice,and discusses how to reproduce the tone of characters in fantasy novels.The original text tells that social worker Linus is assigned to the Marsyas island orphanage to conduct an investigation and evaluation.His task is to determine whether the children in the orphanage will cause harm to the outside world as rumored.Over the course of a month,Linus finds that although the children looked strange,they all have a warm heart.This novel is about letting go of prejudices to treat others,and accepting yourself at the same time.It is a warm and inspiring novel.The translator finds that the language is mysterious but humorous,and the sentence pattern is mainly presented in short dialogue and complex long narrations.The content is sincere and emotional.Based on the interpersonal function theory proposed by Professor Halliday,the translator explores the English-Chinese skills of dialogue and narration in the novel from the perspective of mood and modality system.In order to reproduce the interpersonal meaning of the original text,the translator uses the skills of adding modal words,word order adjustment and division to reconstruct the sentence structure to strengthen the mood,and adopts the translation methods of literal translation and free translation and domesticating strategy to deal with the interpersonal emotion of mood system and the linguistic meaning of the modality system.From the perspective of interpersonal function,this translation practice reproduces the interpersonal and emotional meaning in fantasy novels,aiming to ensure the attraction of fantasy elements,reproduce the charm of characters and further improve the translation effect.Therefore,this translation practice has a guiding significance for the mood and modality translation of fantasy novels.
