“Existential sentences”is one of the fields worth studying between different languages. It refers to the syntactic part of one language, likewise shows the impression of the existence of a nation. Therefore, different languages have different expressions of existence. The focus of this paper is Chinese existential sentences and their expressions in the Serbian language. The main idea of this paper is to conclude the main attributes of Chinese and Serbian existential sentences,as well as to look over and compare the distinctions on Chinese existential sentences and their expressions in the Serbian language with an example of Yu Hua’s novel《To Live》,and in the end to detect the most acceptable expression of Chinese existential sentences in the Serbian language. At the same time,to help Serbian and Chinese learners and translators, the author hopes to come up with a research worth of reference on Chinese existential sentences and their Serbian expressions. After clarifying the main characteristics of the two languages, this paper takes the example of Chinese existential sentences in Yu Hua’s novel《To Live》as the object, analyzes and contrasts its expressions from the grammatical structure, semantic and pragmatic point of view.Through the analyses we strive to extract differences in translation and provide explanations for better understanding.First of all,the expressions which are corresponding to the grammatical structure, semantic and pragmatic point of view are discussed, and then expressions which are not corresponding.Furthermore, the Chinese existential pattern“word of place +existential verb + noun”is discussed, and then the grammatical structure“word of place + noun”of existential sentences is explored. The focus of this paper is to find examples of existential sentences in Yu Hua’s novel and by analyzing and contrasting try to explain differences in translation.Secondly, the author hopes to find out the best expression of Chinese existential sentences in the Serbian language, summarize the laws and characteristics of Chinese existential sentences translated into Serbian.Eventually,we intend to carry out the comparison in the field of Chinese and Serbian ways of expressing existence.
