A Report On The E-C Translation Of "Using Visitor Observations To Predict Proper Waste Disposal:A Case Study From Three Us National Parks"

Nowadays,waste disposal has become a major problem in the international community.Improper waste disposal can pollute the environment,waste resources,andpossibly lead to the spread of diseases.Therefore,it is of great significance to predict the factors that affect people’s waste disposal behavior,and urge people to correctly deal with waste.That helps us to create a healthy living environment.The source text of this translation practice is called “Using Visitor Observations to Predict Proper Waste Disposal: A Case Study from Three US National Parks”(hereinafter referred to as “Using Visitor Observations to Predict Proper Waste Disposal”).Based on the case study of three national parks in the United States,this paper analyzes visitors’ waste disposal,predicts the factors influencing visitors’ waste disposal behavior,and deeply explores thesignificance and influence of these factors to the future waste disposal and management research.The translator takes the “Using Visitor Observations to Predict Proper Waste Disposal” as the source text to carry out the translation practice,and analyzes the difficulties encountered in the translation process.This report is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the research background,purpose and significance of this translation practice.Domestic research on waste disposal are insufficient,and there are few translations of relevant foreign literature in China.So the translator carries out this translation practice in order to provide the latest foreign scientific achievements and experiencefor domestic researchers in this field,andprovide some reference for domestic English translators.The second part introduces the translation process,mainly the preparations before translating,the translation work during translating and the proofreading work after translating.Before translating,the translator reads through the source text“A Case Study from Three US National Parks”,analyzes the source text carefully and determines the aiding tools for this translation.During translating,the translatorattaches great importance to the language expression of the translated text,and tries to achieve equivalence with the source text.After translating,the translatorcarries out the self-proofreading,peer proofreadingand supervisor’s proofreading,so as to make the translated text achieve equivalence with the source text and conform to the Chinese expressions.The third partmakes a case study about the translation difficulties in the translation process from the aspects of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,mainly about the translations of attributive clauses,long and difficult sentences and passive sentences.The translatoralso introducessome useful translation methods like literal translation and liberal translation,and translation techniques like amplification and reverse translation.The fourth part summarizes the achievements.The translatorlearns a lot of practical English expressions and expertiserelated to the field of waste disposal.The translator alsofinds her own shortcomings and makes clear the future directions of the translation work.In this translation practice,the translatorrealizes that translation is a process of practising continuously,summing up lessons and accumulating experience.The translator also realizes that only by improving the ability to understand and express in both Chinese and English can she lay a good foundation for her future translation work.
