A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of The Official Kentucky Visitor’s Guide 2021(Excerpts)

This paper is a practice report based on the English-Chinese translation of the Official Kentucky Visitor’s Guide 2021,a visitor’s guide published by the Kentucky Department of Tourism in 2021,so far there is no Chinese version could be found on the Internet or in any papers.The source text of this translation practice report is culturally informative and it describes the natural scenery,cultural sites,special products and folk traditions of Kentucky.This material is chosen mainly for three reasons.Firstly,the translation of visitor’s guides is very important for China,a country famous for its tourism.Secondly,few domestic scholars translate or research visitor’s guides.Thirdly,the translation quality of tourism materials in China is not good.The Official Kentucky Visitor’s Guide 2021 is a tourist text that contains a lot of culture-loaded information as well as long sentences and sentences with inanimate subjects.Due to the fact that China and the West have different cultures and languages,the translator has encountered many difficult problems during the whole translation practice,such as how to translate some words with rich cultural connotations,descriptive adjectives,nominalizations,sentences with inanimate subjects and long sentences.Based on the reflection of this translation practice,the translator has proposed different solutions to the above-mentioned translation difficulties.The translator considers that free translation and literal translation with annotation are better strategies to translate cultural-loaded words;the translator translates descriptive adjectives through semantic extension and part of speech conversion;the translator translates nominalizations by means of part of speech conversion,amplification and omission;the long sentences in the source text are translated by division and inversion;for the sentences with inanimate things as their subjects,the translator mainly uses two solutions,one is to still translate them into inanimate subjects,and the other is to translate them into sentences with inanimate subjects.This translation practice and the reflection after translation have made the translator understand the translation of tourism texts better.And at the same time,the translator accumulated much useful translation experience and clarified the strategies,which could be adopted to solve the difficulties appearing in the translating of tourism texts.At the same time,this translation practice lays a solid foundation for my future translation study and practice and provides a reference for other translators.
