Report On The Translation Of China’s National Human Geography-Shigatse (Excerpt)

This is a Chinese-English translation report,which is based on China’s National Human Geography—Shigatse(Excerpt).Some difficulties and translation strategies are concluded by the translator in the process of translation.The book,written by China’s National Human Geography editorial committee,is an authoritative encyclopedia of Chinese human geography.It is a detailed description of the city,including six parts:introduction to Shigatse,historical sites,natural landscape,folk customs,developing achievements and city blueprint.The purpose of the translation aims at editing an English city brochure introducing geological sights,natural resources,historic culture and other aspects in Shigatse.Therefore,the author selects several important parts from this book,translated them into English and wrote the report on the translation.The author discusses difficulties encountered during translation,and explores translation strategies,hoping to be helpful to the translation study of Shigatse?s publicity in the future.There are four chapters in this translation report.The first chapter is task description,introducing the client,the content and significance of the task.The second chapter is process description.Chapter three is the case analysis,in which the difficulties in translation are expounded at the linguistic level,cultural level and communicative level.Examples from translation practice are selected for illustration and analysis,and corresponding solutions are put forward.Chapter four is the conclusion of this translation practice,in which the translator?s competence and accomplishment as well as self-reflection and expectation are discussed.It is the author?s hope that this translation practice report could provide reference for translation and the study of the international publicity translation in the future.
