A Report On The Translation Of Handbook For International Graduate Students In NUAA(Part 1-5)

With an increasing number of foreign students recently choosing to further their study in Chinese universities,university regulations,as a guide for students‘ daily life and academic learning,in this context plays an indispensable role in adjusting students‘behavior and managing their affairs.In academic circle,research achievements of English translation of law text currently are quite common while those of university regulations are so insufficient and devoid of definite methodology as a guidance that some problems arose such as improper word use,inaccurate translation method and ambiguous text style.English translation of university regulations therefore gradually shows its vital significance and value.The text of the translation report is selected from the first to the fifth part of the Handbook for International Graduate Students in NUAA which is featured with a large amount of professional vocabulary,complex and diverse sentence patterns,and rigorous style with appropriateness.At the syntactic level,the difficulty lies in how to express the English language appropriately,the frequent occurrence of non-sentences and conditional sentences with “的”;at the semantic level,the original translation in language accuracy is slightly deviated;while at the stylistic level,when to add necessary text information and how to express the official text euphemistically also constitute a huge challenge for many translators.Chesterman‘s translation norms focus both on the intra-textural and extra-textural factors,proposing a guiding significance in solving translation difficulties in different aspects,thus the thesis,based on the norm theory,explores translation strategies in three aspects by case study: syntax,semantics and pragmatics.The study has found that in terms of syntactic strategy,transposition and sentence structure change are good methods to well express the English language and solve the translation of non-subject sentences and conditional sentence with “的”;in semantic strategy,reverse and distribution change may provide a valid guideline for improving translation accuracy and fluency;while in pragmatic strategy,explicitness change offer readers with more accurate and comprehensive information,and interpersonal change,which is realized by the correct use of the modal verbs,may boost the relationship between colleges and students.All of the strategies will effectively achieve responsibility,relation and communication norm so as to provide convenience for the international graduate students and offer some references for similar university regulations.
