Chinglish is a challenging problem for Chinese English learners due to the vast difference between Chinese and English.As a native language teaching method,the production-oriented approach emphasizes the combination of learning and use.In this study,the production-oriented approach is used to reduce Chinglish in the writing of junior middle school students,and three research questions are proposed: 1.Can the production-oriented approach be used to help reduce Chinglish in junior students’ English writing? 2.Compared with the traditional writing teaching method,can the production-oriented approach improve students’ writing ability more significantly? 3.What is the relation between reducing Chinglish and raising confidence and motivation? This research’s subject is fifty-one ninth-graders,none of whom have received systematic writing training designed to reduce Chinglish.The production-oriented approach was adopted in the experimental class,while the traditional English writing teaching method was used in the control class.Both classes took the pre-test and the post-test.And they were given four chances to write in each round of action research.Students were given questionnaires four times,and they took interviews after the action research.The results of the action research are listed as follows.First,the production-oriented approach can reduce Chinglish in the writing of junior middle school students.It can effectively reduce Chinglish in the first round of action research and achieve better results in the second round.Chinglish is still reduced in the third round,though not as significantly as the first two rounds,which may be correlated reciprocally with students’ familiarity with writing topics.Second,the production-oriented approach can improve students’ writing ability more significantly than the traditional writing teaching method.The efficiency of improving writing ability goes in line with reducing Chinglish.The production-oriented approach can help students progress most significantly in structure,and there are improvements in language.However,improvements in content depend on students’ background knowledge related to writing topics.Third,there exists a correlation between reducing Chinglish writing and raising writing confidence and motivation.The production-oriented approach can enable students to reduce Chinglish,which can help raise writing confidence and motivation.And such improvement in writing confidence and motivation can help students reduce Chinglish writing more significantly afterwards.This research is a relatively new attempt to apply the production-oriented approach to reducing Chinglish writing in junior middle school students.Since the essence of the production-oriented approach is the effective combination of learning and use,it is suitable to combine the production-oriented approach with reducing Chinglish.This way,students will be less troubled by Chinglish,and they can produce more authentic writing. |
