This report is based on an English-Chinese translation about the excerpt of The Return: Fathers,Sons and the Land in Between(2017),a Libyan-American biography written by Hisham Matar. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 2017.He showed the society of Libya during the collapse of the Qaddafi‘s government and his own determination to verify his father‘s destiny and reclaim the estate. The author finished about half of the book, and takes it as the source text. The translation report has four parts. The first part briefly introduces the project, including the background of the project, project description and report structure.Next, the second part gives a general description of the translation process which includes preparations, translation process and after-translation management. Then,as the main section of the report, the third part consists of case analysis and translation methods and techniques of noun phrases.Lastly, the fourth part summarizes major findings, limitations and suggestions for future studies.During the process of translation, the author finds it difficult to translate noun phrases that include many meanings.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory, the author found that she mainly adopted the methods of literal translation, addition, conversion, semantic shift, advance and division to translate noun phrases,so as to accurately convey the meaning of the original text, improve the expression effect and reduce the obstacle in reading.Through this translation practice, the author has a better understanding of the importance of the integration of theory with practice which is significant for the improvement of translation competence.
