News Translation Practice

With the rapid development of information technology and real-time update of world news information,people can quickly access global information and pay more attention to international news.The source text is selected from articles about George Floyd’s death by police violence from The New York Times published in May and June in 2020.Based on the translation and analysis of selected materials,combined with case study and comparative analysis,this thesis is aimed to discuss the textual characteristics and research status,summarize translation difficulties and translation strategies,and provide some reference for translation of social hot news.The thesis first introduces the content and structure of news reports and column comments on the death of George Floyd by police violence,and explains research background and literature review.Then the thesis introduces translation process in detail,and analyzes textual characteristics of source text from The New York Times.Guided by the principle of faithfulness,accuracy and readability,this thesis explores faithfulness and expressiveness of news translation,analyzes translation difficulties and solutions at the lexical,sentence and discourse levels,summarizes news translation strategies and methods through comparison and induction,and studies translation methods of ideological problems in news reports.Through this translation practice,the author realizes the importance of expressing source text faithfully,correctly and smoothly,and hopes to provide some reference for English news translation.
