The translation material of this practice report is the 28 th chapter of the famous19 th century gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer, which is often regarded as the end of the first wave of gothic novel populated from the later part of the 18 th century until the early 19 th century Britain. The fiction was written by Charles Robert Maturin and published in 1820.The book includes 39 chapters altogether, which introduces several intertwined horrible stories with typical gothic features. The 28 th chapter records a complete horrible story with gothic features,in which Walberg and his family live in misery and poverty,to cast off the plight,Walberg is almost tempted to trade with "tempters" or called “the enemy of man” in the chapter. The report mainly consists four parts: introduction, translation process, case analysis and conclusion. The part of introduction includes overview of the source text, characteristics of the source text and significance of the translation task. The translation process involves translation preparation, implementation of the translation and translation quality control.Case analysis is the focus of the report, which is guided by Newmark?s semantic and communicative translation theory and the corresponding translating strategies are applied in lexical level, syntactic level and textual level to solve the problems encountered in the translation practice. In chapter four, the translator summarizes and reflects the translation practice to accumulate experience for future translation tasks.Through efforts, the author has completed the translation practice relatively well. However, there are still many deficiencies in translation practice, due to the author?s limited ability. For this translation practice, the translator expects to get pertinent suggestions and corrections.Furthermore, the translator needs to constantly study and practice to improve translation ability for future translation practice.
