An Experimental Study On Applying Genre-based Approach To English Reading Teaching In Senior High School

Abstract/Summary:
The National English Curriculum Standards(2017)propagates the general goal of fostering students’ four core qualities of English subject,including language knowledge,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural awareness.To implement that,six elements are proposed in teaching English course.Among the six elements,discourse type is unprecedently put forward.This element requires students to learn different types of discourses,get familiar with the common forms of discourses,grasp their specific structures,stylistic features and disparate ways of expression.In addition,The National English Curriculum Standards suggests designing reading lessons based on the text,guiding students to analyze the text structure and observing the language features of particular text.Based on the theory of genre and genre analysis,the concept of Genre-based Approach(GBA)is consistent with the new requirements of The National English Curriculum Standards.In recent years,Genre-based Approach has been widely implemented in English writing and reading at home and abroad,while there are not sufficient studies which come up with specific and operable teaching steps for English reading teaching which follow the guideline of The National English Curriculum Standards.Therefore,the author combines the empirical research of predecessors with the practical situation of national English reading teaching in senior high schools,and comes up with four operable steps to conduct reading teaching based on GBA.The four steps are: Context setting;Model analysis;Independent analysis;Discussion and practice.Meanwhile,according to the Teaching Knowledge Test Course published by Cambridge University Press,reading involves using seven reading skills.Generally speaking,the more skilled of students in using reading skills,the better they perform in reading.Therefore,in order to explore whether the adoption of Genre-based Approach can improve students’ English reading abilities,this study is devoted to finding out whether the application of GBA in English reading teaching can improve students’ reading skills of understanding the text structure,skimming,and inferring.In this study,students from two classes in Grade 10 are selected as the experimental subjects.Genre-based Approach is implemented in experimental class while the traditional teaching methods are applied in the control class.Moreover,the experiment lasts for over three months and test papers,questionnaires,and interviews are taken as research instruments.Both the experimental class and the control class have pre-test and post-test before and after the experiment.While the questionnaires and interviews are only implemented in experimental class.On the one hand,through analyzing the results from the tests and questionnaires,it has been verified that the application of GBA in high school English reading teaching is effective in enhancing students’ reading skills,including the skills of understanding the text structure,skimming,and inferring.On the other hand,through analyzing the results of interviews,it has been found that students’ awareness of genre has improved as they gradually understand that the articles of different genres have different communicative purposes,text structures and language features.Therefore,it is preferable to conduct English reading teaching based on GBA so as to enhance students’ core competence and satisfy the new requirements of English teaching.
