Under the background of information technology,basic education is constantly being reformed and reading teaching also faces more challenges.Reading,as an important basic skill,has always occupied a large proportion in English teaching of junior high schools.Through reading,students can not only get the information they need,but also improve the ability to apply language in a comprehensive way.So how to improve students’ reading ability more effectively in various ways has become the center in many teachers’ and scholars’ studies.So genre-based teaching approach came into being.Based on the theory of genre and genre analysis,scholars applied it to the actual teaching class.The research starts from the direction of Junior high schools.Based on the analysis of English textbooks in Shandong Education Edition,this research divides the genres into five categories,including narration,expository text,applied text,argumentative writings and other discourses.And it also makes teaching designs for the most common three genres of narration,expository text and applied text.Then,it is applied to the reading teaching of the experimental class to discuss whether the genre-based teaching approach can improve the junior high school students’ genre awareness,reading speed and reading accuracy.Through the pre-test of questionnaire and experiment,the writer can have a general understanding of students’ genre awareness and their current levels of reading.After that,a four-month experiment was carried out,in which the traditional teaching method was implemented in the control class and the genre-based teaching approach was implemented in the experimental class.At last,through the post-test of questionnaire and the experiment,the writer can understand the learning effect of the students in these two classes.And through interviews,the writer acquires the details of genre-based teaching approach in the implementation process so that this method can have a long-term development.After the research,the data of the questionnaire,the speed and scores of the pre-test and post-test in test papers are counted,and the SPSS25.0 software is used for analyzing the data.It is found that the application of the genre-based teaching approach can significantly help improve the students’ genre awareness,reading speed and reading accuracy.Genre-based teaching approach is an effective way to improve students’ reading levels,so the writer hopes that more first-line schools’ English teachers can pay more attention to the application of genre-based teaching approach in junior high schools’ reading teaching,so as to promote the long-term development of English teaching.
