Reading is a complex process.With the development of research in the field of psychologists,applied linguistics and discourse linguistics,the discussion about reading comprehension is becoming complicated.Effective reading is preceded by discourse patterns,namely genre knowledge of the passage structure.Readers are hard to do effective reading without discourse knowledge(胡春洞,1988),based on which genre-based approach came into being.Genre-based approach applies the theory of genre and genre analysis to the classroom,and develops teaching activities revolving around the schematic structure of a text.It is attempted by teaching genre knowledge to cultivate students' genre awareness under certain social and cultural environment for enhancing their reading comprehension.It is well known that genre-based approach has become a popular framework in advanced English teaching like English for specific purpose(ESP) and English for academic purpose(EAP),as well as in teaching English writing and spoken-English, and has achieved sound results.However,the genre-based approach has rarely been applied into teaching reading,especially in Mid-level Professional School.Based on this situation,the author sets out to make a study to prove the importance and necessity of applying genre analysis theory to teaching reading,to seek to find ways to combine the two into practice,and further attempts to explore the effective ways to improve the students' reading comprehension.In the first chapter,the author first introduces the important position of reading in teaching English,lists the problems in current teaching reading,and concludes that the lack of systematic theory direction accounts for low efficiency in teaching.Then the genre-based teaching approach which is based on the genre analysis theory is put forwards.In Chapter Two the author introduces some teaching reading theories and reading modes both at home and abroad,and reviews the background and development of genre,genre analysis,and current situation of the application of genre-based approach.Proceeding from the above study,the author makes experiment in Chapter Three to test whether the application of such theory can improve Mid-level Profession English teaching reading in practice,and whether this application can benefit the students' reading speed and their reading comprehension.The author adopts several methods to carry out this experiment,such as comparing different teaching modes,collecting materials,constructive analysis and conclusion.At last, after presenting and analyzing the result and data,the author argues that the adopted theory and approach proved to be fruitful in enhancing students' reading comprehension in Mid-level Professional School,and this approach is apparently superior to traditional teaching method,namely word by word and sentence by sentence.Meanwhile the author suggests some implications for Mid-level Professional English teaching reading in future as well,that is,teachers should cultivate the students' genre awareness and constantly apply the genre analysis theory into practice,and analyze the text structure and text language style by discourse genre analysis to improve the students' wholly reading comprehension.
