| This is a translation report based on the U.S.Department of Education document titled U.S.Department of Education FY 2019 Work Report and FY 2021 Work Plan.“Strategic Goal 2” and “How to Read Performance Data” sections of the document are selected as the source text.They introduce the U.S.Department of Education’s performance in fiscal year 2019 and plans for fiscal year 2021 from five perspectives:increasing access to higher education,promoting evidence-based strategies,developing career pathways,improving student aid services,and enhancing borrowers’ solvency.The source text of this translation report is a government report with formal and logical language.It is analyzed as an informative text according to Peter Newmark’s theory of text typology.The difficulty in translation mainly lies in the handling of abundant terms and abbreviations,while other problems include incorrect translation of graphs and figures,incorrect collocation,redundancy,and logical confusion.The translator solves these problems by adopting solutions such as consulting parallel texts,respecting related regulations,following collocation rules,deleting redundant elements,and conducting careful logical checks.Various translation techniques are applied,including addition,omission,division,etc.,and CAT tools,with their translation memory and quality assurance systems,play a constructive role in the process.Each problem or solution is described and analyzed in detail with specific examples.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained a certain understanding of higher education in the U.S.His translation capability,as well as information retrieving and absorbing abilities,are practiced and improved.Nevertheless,the translator realizes that there still is space for improvement in CAT tools proficiency,professional knowledge,and logical thinking and analyzing abilities,which the translator will strive to strengthen in future study and work. |
