| For a long time, documentaries have been widely loved by audiences around the world, and they have also triggered in-depth research on documentaries. With the deepening of the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, foreign documentaries continue to flow into China, and a large number of documentary subtitle translation also appears in various media. There are not many researches dedicated to the translation of documentary subtitles,so there is still a lot of research space. This paper takes the subtitle of documentary Call of the Baby Beluga as the source text of translation, and carries on the translation practice under the guidance of translation theories and translation techniques. The first chapter mainly introduces the background of the translation project, including the source of the translation project, the brief introduction of the project content. It also describes the translation process, which is divided into pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.The second chapter is the literature review. It explains the subtitle translation research situation at home and abroad. And it also introduces the CEA(Comprehension,Expression,Adaptation)structure briefly.Chapter three provides some cases to analyse the translation process which is based on the CEA structure. This chapter is mainly a detailed discussion of the solutions to the problems and difficulties encountered in the translation process. The comprehension part of this chapter talks about how to understand some special words about the life habits of beluga whales and some quoted words in the source text.It also discussed how to translate some sentences based on the comprehension of the whole text.In order to make the expression of the original text in line with the target language expression habits, the author has adopted some translation methods. The expression part is also divided into two aspects: at word level and at sentence level. At the word level, the author provides some cases to illustrate how to make the target text more acceptable to the readers by using translation methods such as part of speech conversion and changing the meaning of words. And at sentence level, some cases are analyzed to illustrate how to adjust word order and how to deal with passive voice to make the translation more familiar with the target readers. In addition,in the face of different problems, the functional equivalence theory and translation shift theory are comprehensively applied. The adaptation part mainly uses omission and amplification translation methods. The last chapter is summary, which summarized the experience in the whole process of translation. In this translation report, some experience and reflections are summarized during the translation process:(1)In translation, the translator should apply flexible translation methods instead of being limited to a translation theory.(2)In order to ensure the accuracy of the statement, the translator should thoroughly investigate the background knowledge of some words in special fields and look for parallel texts.(3)At the lexical level,Catford’s theory of translation shift can be used when part-of-speech conversion is needed;Nida’s theory of functional equivalence can be used as a guide when word meaning needs to be changed;omission can be used for information repetition;and amplification should be applied for incomplete information. The author has gained deeper understanding on the theoretical applications and different text styles, and also some translation experience has been accumulated for subtitle translation. At the same time, the author also learned how to use network tools to search for useful information. In one word, the author realized it needs a lot of practices to be a good translator. |
