Translation Report On The Economist From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

With the rapid development of economic globalization,the economies of the countries around the world are closely linked.As a well-known financial and economic magazine,The Economist has always been an important material for domestic scholars to improve their knowledge and capabilities.Translating The Economist can not only improve the author’s translation ability but also help domestic English scholars to make further research of the language in this magazine.Above all,it provides non-English scholars with the latest and accurate information on finance.There are many long and difficult sentences in The Economist,among which there are numerous adverbial clauses of time and condition in the “Finance and Economics” section.Adverbial clauses are flexible in position with many conjunctions and complicated logic.Chinese and English are different in terms of language logic.The English logic is always reflected through the conjunction;while the Chinese logic is usually hidden in the sentence.How to translate in a proper way to make the same logic hidden in the translation is a difficult point in this translation practice.This practice report selects the articles in the “Finance and Economics” section of The Economist from May to August in 2019 as translation objects.Based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the author has read relevant literature,compared the characters between English and Chinese and analyzed the cases,finding that there are mainly five translation methods to translate adverbial clauses: the linear translation method;the shifting translation method;the conversion translation method;the omission translation method and the reorganization translation method.The communicative translation theory takes the reader as the center and aims at communication,so the accuracy and the readability of the translation are the most important.Therefore,the linear translation method is mainly used when the Chinese and English sentence structures are the same;the shifting translation method is used when the Chinese and English sentence structures are different;the conversion translation method is mainly used when the conjunction in the adverbial clause indicates the other logical relationships to make the translation more concise and in line with the expression habits of Chinese language;the reorganization translation method is mainly used when the sentence is too long with many parentheses,aiming at making the translation smoother and more understandable.This practice report is based on the theory of communicative translation.It aims to analyze the translation of adverbial clauses in the “Finance and Economics” section of The Economist and summarize the effective translation methods and strives to make the translation more consistent with Chinese expression habits,helping other scholars for further research.
